How Can I Get A Decent Nights sleep?

How to achieve peaceful rest and sleep

All the parts of the human body work together, although each one has its special part to do. The stomach must have time to rest between meals, and your mind needs rest after a long day. The other parts of the body require rest, too. This they usually get while we are asleep. We must not be neglectful and fail to give them enough rest, or they will soon get worn out which leads to troublesome ailments or bodily disease.

Today we are going to explore some of the ideas and strategies that will enable us all to get a good nights rest and a better sleep. Concentrating on meditation and mindfulness techniques i was given as a Buddhist monk that I feel during this time of uncertainty can and will help many of you to achieve great results and recharge your bodies

Sometimes, when people are stressed, anxious or just plain tired out, they find they cannot sleep well at night. There are a number of little things that can be done to induce a peaceful nights sleep. A warm bath before retiring, followed by a gentle massage, especially along the spine, often will, by relaxing the nerves and muscles, produce very good results. A hot foot bath, which draws the blood away from the brain, frequently will be found beneficial. A glass of hot milk or cocoa, taken just before retiring, often will have the same effect. If the sleeplessness is a result of indigestion, a plain diet will relieve. Sleeping upon a hard bed without any pillow sometimes produces the desired effect, but maybe that’s one for Buddhist monks. And finally always try to have plenty of fresh air circulating in the room wherever possible.

However the best possible way to keep the mind free from the cares of the day & create a beautiful restful and relaxing sleep is with meditation or practicing mindfulness.

If you find your mind feels crowded with thoughts running around seemingly out of your control then we have a few mini meditations and mindfulness techniques that are guaranteed to work. A Mantra meditation which is a simple loving and soothing sentence we repeat over and over allows our minds to start to unwind and relax.

One very simple exercise is to close the left nostril by pressing on it with the finger, then take four deep breaths through the right nostril. Then close the right nostril and take four deep breaths through the left one. Repeat this about four times. Then breathe slowly through both nostrils, but count your breaths. You seldom will count very many before falling fast asleep.

Other exercises, meditations and mindfulness techniques to help with better rest & peaceful sleep

A body scan meditation is a wonderful technique that calms any busy mind. Follow these simple instructions while comfortably in bed, lying flat on your back with your eyes closed. We use our sense of touch to experience our bodies in a whole new light

The Wave Meditation is one of the most astonishing meditations that I know, taught to me personally by my Abbott when I was a Buddhist monk and having problems with an over thinking mind. A visualisation technique that brings instant soothing from any busy day.

The breath dance technique is another relaxing technique or meditation to bring about a peaceful nights sleep and can be equally used at anytime of the day to sooth and caress our over thinking minds. Simply using the power of our own breath to bring us into the present moment.

Never take any sleeping powders or tablets except upon the advice of a doctor, for they usually contain drugs that can damage your heart over long periods.
