The Art of Being an Optimist

Learning The Art of Being an Optimist

Optimism is a choice

Learning the art of being an Optimist is a SIMPLE choice.

Optimism is a skill set that you learn, it is a way of living, and as such it is within your power to choose to learn and become more optimistic.

The more you practice being optimistic, the more likely it will come naturally.

Being an optimist

Optimism is about embracing the possibility of failure and being okay with it

Pessimists are afraid of failure because it’s too close to the things they fear most. Optimists, on the other hand, make peace with the possible outcomes. They know that failure is often a necessary part of learning and growing.

This mindset lets us try interesting new things without fear of repercussions. Yes, we may fall on our face and look like an idiot—but we also might learn some valuable lessons along the way that help us become more self-aware.

Optimism isn’t about never facing adversity; it’s about embracing what life has to offer and being open to new possibilities, even if they may not work out in our favor. By having this mindset, you’ll be able to take risks without getting thrown off by unexpected setbacks or obstacles—whether it’s trying a crazy flavor combination at your favorite ice cream place or taking on a challenging new project at work while balancing your responsibilities as a parent or caregiver. It all comes back full circle: Failure breeds success because we learn from our mistakes!

Optimistic people have more fun

Bring an optimist

It’s true that sometimes life is terrible. Yet, numerous studies have shown that optimists are more likely to be healthy and successful than pessimists. Let’s look at why this happens.

  • Optimistic people tend to see obstacles as opportunities rather than setbacks. For example, when a pessimist loses their job, they may feel like the world is ending and sink into bouts of depression. An optimist, on the other hand, sees this loss as an opportunity to revamp their resume or try out new career paths.
  • Optimistic people are more likely to try new things because they know something good will come out of it in the end. When I was younger, I was terrified of heights and would never go near a roller coaster or high bridge—but after talking with an optimistic friend who convinced me it would be fine (and maybe even fun), I went on my first big-drop roller coaster ride and loved it!
  • Optimistic people are more likely to be happier overall because they focus on their accomplishments rather than mistakes or failures

Optimists don’t have rose-colored glasses

Optimists don’t wear rose-colored glasses. They know the world isn’t perfect and they’re not blind to its problems. Instead of accepting things as they are, they believe they can make a difference and find solutions to those problems. Even when things go wrong, optimists don’t give up hope. Instead, they look for ways around their problems

If you think about it having high self-esteem is one of the best predictors of happiness. Optimists are very positive in their outlook on life and themselves so it makes sense that they would have high self-esteem and be happier than pessimists.

They have been shown to live longer, possibly because their positive attitude helps them deal with stress more effectively or maybe because optimists are more likely to take care of themselves.

Pessimism is also a simple choice

“If you’re a pessimist, that means you use your imagination to find problems and obstacles in every situation. You believe that your worst fears are going to happen, so why not take precautions against them?

“Now, if you’re an optimist, you ignore the negative and focus instead on what’s positive. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, you imagine every possible solution: “What if X happens? What can I do to fix it?”

“By becoming more optimistic and less pessimistic over time, you’ll learn how to stay resilient when things go wrong. That way it won’t be a surprise when something bad does happen. And because optimists are always looking for the positive in any given situation, they will see the silver lining very quickly.”

Pessimistic people find more problems than optimistic people

You can be a pessimist and still be successful, but it’s harder. Pessimists tend to focus on the negative aspects of a situation and may be more likely to give up in the face of adversity. This is largely because pessimists are more likely to experience negative emotions like anxiety and depression, which can affect their ability to perform under pressure.

Being an optimist doesn’t mean ignoring or minimizing problems; it means recognizing them without letting them slow you down. Optimism isn’t about forcing yourself to think that everything will always turn out okay; it’s about having faith that things will eventually work out for the best, even when they don’t immediately seem like they will.

So what does this have to do with success? Well, if you’re an optimist who believes that they can overcome whatever obstacles come their way then they’re more likely than a pessimistic person who thinks nothing good ever comes from hard work or perseverance….

Optimism can be learned

Being an optimist

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.” This quote doesn’t exactly conjure up images of a bright-eyed optimist, and yet Nietzsche himself was a self-proclaimed fan of optimism, going so far as to say that it was “the only reasonable attitude for man.”

But how can someone who recognizes that “to live is to suffer” be truly optimistic? Perhaps the answer lies in his explanation of how he came to this conclusion: “I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.” In other words, pessimistic thinking may be inevitable—but it does not have to define you.

The good news about optimism is that it can be learned; we all have the choice whether or not we allow negative thoughts and feelings into our lives. So when you find yourself dwelling on things like your lack of progress on an important goal or a recent setback with your health (both real life examples), you have the power within you to change your mindset and decide that this particular situation will turn out okay after all—or even better than okay!

Learning to be optimistic

Optimism is a trait most people wish they could master. We know that it can boost our health, happiness, and confidence, but how exactly do we get there? In this guide to optimism, we’ll show you how to work the art into your daily routine:

  • What is optimism?

Optimism starts with an open mind and an optimistic outlook on life. It’s about embracing the opportunity for growth and progress in any situation or circumstance, because most things have a silver lining (you just have to look for it). Think of a pessimist as someone who believes that everything that goes wrong is the end of the world; an optimist believes that everything can go right.

  • How can optimism help me?

Optimists tend to be happier and more successful than those with pessimistic personalities—allowing them to see mistakes as lessons rather than failures. Optimists also typically have a higher level of self-esteem than their pessimistic counterparts, which translates into more confidence in their abilities to take on new challenges or handle tough situations effectively when they arise. This isn’t meant to say that pessimists are generally weak or ineffective; instead it’s just important to remember that no one is immune from mistakes or setbacks while still maintaining an optimistic outlook in life overall.

The Art of Positive Thinking

What is the Art of Positive Thinking?

Dhamma Tāpasā explores the art of positive thinking and how we can all practice and develop this fundamental life skill.

The art of positive thinking and how to think positive

Being optimistic, and having a positive outlook on life can seem a rather daunting challenge at the moment. However I promise you the art of positive thinking is needed now more than ever.

So what and how do you develop a real sense of optimism? Especially when most of the so called civilised world seems to be falling apart around in front of our eyes. And is being too positive or optimistic a bad thing? Perhaps it’s better to fall victim to the doom and gloom that the media portrays after all?

The choice is your hands. You can be as happy and as positive as you think! Of course this is true for being as negative and unhappy as you wish!

What would you choose? The art of positive thinking is realising that we all have that choice. We can simply choose to be more positive or we can choose to be negative.

How we experience the world around us and the true art of positive thinking

Because your reading this, then you must be human and as humans we all experience the world the same way. Not all humans experience the same events or circumstances in life. And we definitely don’t have the same reactions to these circumstances as each other. Every single one of us has experienced anger in our lives. It’s the events or circumstances that triggered our reaction that’s completely different.

For some of us anger comes from being let down by another. Others this anger could be triggered by an incident on the road, perhaps someone cut us up in the morning. And still further some of us get angry because of the weather.

The events and circumstances to trigger anger can be an infinite number of circumstances. However the reaction to choose is innately yours and yours alone. So let’s choose the art of positive thinking.

The art of positive thinking and never ever give up

So how does the mind work?

Every circumstance or event that happens to us comes from the outside. It comes too us from our 5 senses, our sense of touch, taste, hearing, seeing and feeling. This experience is then processed in our conscious mind, the inside. We will use many unconscious filters and ideology’s we have gathered throughout our lives and process this information. And all in a matter of nano seconds.

We use these filters that have been developed slowly over our lifetime and process this information. Like our Good or Bad filter as an example. Is what’s happening good or bad? Our positive or negative filter, Is this event a positive or negative one?

Outside-In vs Inside-Out

So how do we change this process?

Just understanding this process is a giant leap forward. By fully grasping the above paragraphs you can change your thinking. You can create more positivity in your life. The art of positive thinking is now in your grasp.

The momentary pause this understanding gives us is all that’s needed to replace our existing filters. We can begin to replace our dysfunctional filters with brand new responses.

To see the world as happening from inside-out rather than outside-in will change your perspective dramatically. By noticing that it is not the outside circumstances that dictate our reaction, but the inside experience that does. This will let you begin too change your responses, which in turn will effect your behaviours. This is now truly the art of positive thinking!

The next time an outside event happens, pause before your conscious responds. Choose instead to see it for what it is. Nothing more than a sense impression on your mind and choose the art of positivity.

The art of positive thinking

If you want to find out more and learn about the your human mind then I would be delighted to help you further.

Living with Regret

What Regrets Do You Have?

Almost every single person I’ve ever helped during a life coaching session is living with regret.

So what’s it like living with regret? I myself have lived with regrets and I’m someone who has travelled extensively since the early 1990’s. Travelling to well over 50 countries around the world. As well as living and worked full time in countries like South Africa, Costa Rica, Australia, Thailand and Portugal. I’ve even met some of the most historical figures of our time. Nelson Mandela, Christian Barnard and Thich Nhat Hanh to name just a couple. Spending many years training as a Buddhist monk. And even spent time as a river guide and overland safari guide across Africa. Worked in a tropical Cloud Forest and learnt 3 languages.

And yet I still had regrets

Now some of you may read all of the above and think I’ve have had an amazing life. And believe me I know I have. I’ve seen opportunity and taken it, where others only see fear I see adventure. But everyone I’ve ever asked this question, is living with regret in some form or other. And there it’s always some similarities.

My regrets are simple and cause me no sleepless nights. I’ve lived a truly extra ordinary life, grabbing life by the horns so to speak. The regrets I have are NOT what I’ve done but always what I haven’t done. And this is an all too common issue.

We regret NOT doing something IN OUR LIFE!

I’ve regretted NOT asking that girl out, NOT spending more time surfing, or NOT visiting airs rock while in Australia. But that was then. Now as I trained as a Buddhist monk and then becoming an accredited NLP teacher I’ve now learnt the tricks needed to live without having Regrets.

So what do you regret in your life?

A GREAT little exercise that helps us stop living with regret. And most Life Coaches use with people who maybe unhappy about how their life turned out, ask this simple question.

Ask yourself this:

“Imagine you are on your deathbed and your looking back on your life. What has to happened in your life for you to truly feel like you’ve lived a fantastic and fulfilling existence?”

These are the 5 Most common answers to this question. Which one sounds like YOU?

I Wish I Had The Courage To Live A Life True To Myself, Not The Life Others Expected Of Me.

If Only I Hadn’t Worked So Hard.

I Should Of Have Had The Courage To Express My Feelings.

If Only I Had Stayed In Touch With My Friends.

I Wish I Had Let Myself Be Happier.

So what would it take for you to live a fulfilled and happier life? What would it be like learning to have the courage to face your fears head on. Learning NOT to have regrets or missing out on some great opportunities. Visualise what it would be like learning to let go and saying YES more often? How would it be to learn a new skill thar helps you into a more fulfilling career? Or perhaps too feel proud of yourself?

My own experience:

My own personal experience with death and these regrets came when I saw my auntie on her sickbed, when I was 12 years old. I don’t really remember the circumstances why my auntie was dying at home, I just have a very vivid and clear picture in my mind.

The image i have is that of sitting in my aunties bedroom as my mum visited. My mother was chatting while I just sat in a chair. I remember looking at all the tubes and machines see was linked up too and felt rather sad. She told my mum that before she died she just wanted to feel “the sand between her toes and to feel the grass under her feet just one last time”. And as a result this simple phrase has stick in my mind ever since and with an unshakable force.

Wow that hit me hard and I remember thinking that those were such simple joyful and completely free things to want. I honestly believe this is one of the most major reasons I’ve spent virtually my entire life travelling the entire world exploring these FREE and simple things.

If you want to know how to Stop living with regret continue reading

I’ve worked with many people from many walks of life and too date helped well over a hundred people take ACTION to start living a more fulfilling life. I’ve taught others to find something that makes them feel valued, Proud and fulfilled with their lives and I want to do the same for you.

The Prisons we create within our own Mind

Two Short Motivational Moral Stories

The Prisons of Our Minds

The prisons we create within our mind can have a devastating effect on our wellbeing. This story that follows is a scientific fact, and demonstrates beautifully how as humans we create prisons within our own mind. Usually these prisons keep us from achieving our greatest desires and a lot of the time we have no idea we’ve even created them.

These prisons we create in our own mind are also known as a glass ceiling. An invisible ceiling we believe we can’t move past. This glass ceiling feeling could be found in our relationships, our monetary income, business dealings or just about any aspects within our own lives.

The Common House Flea

The common house flea is one of the smallest animals on the earth. Not much bigger than a couple of millimetres. However this little creature has a remarkable ability. It has the power in those tiny back legs to propel itself to jump 200 times it’s own height. I’m relation to a cat that’s over 16 times higher.

Now if you capture a house flea and place a glass cup over them, something very interesting happens.

The prisons of our minds

When the flea jumps to try and escape he will keep hitting his little head on the bottom of the glass cup. After a few more attempts and with each jump ending in a headache, the flea realises what’s happening and will adjust his jumping height accordingly. The flea will now jump to just under this new glass roof or glass ceiling. After all why would you want to jump and keep smacking your head on the roof.

Now for the really interesting bit.

When you remove the glass our poor flea has now been conditioned into jumping at this new height. He has learnt from experience that if he jumps any higher it will smack its head on the glass ceiling.

This is the glass ceiling syndrome or the prisons we create in our own minds. Everyone of us as humans will create these so called glass ceilings within our minds. From telling yourself your not good enough, to feeling self pity over a lack of money. Everyone of us as humans has at least a few of these glass ceilings or prisons created.

Here’s Another example:

A fully grown elephant is one of the strongest and largest mammals to walk the earth and a far cry from the little house flea in the previous story. However the poor elephant will also develop its own glass ceiling.

The Elephant Trainer

The elephant shirt story on prisons we create within our minds

This is also a scientifically proven idea and the story was told to me by a Loas forest farmer who used elephants to do the work of a tractor.

When I was a Buddhist monk I used to watch every morning as an old man and his son walked from there house that over looked the Mekong river down to a small enclosed paddock to collect there two prized elephants. They would climb on top and go to work in the forest. Everyday at around lunch time they would come out of the forest and visit a local small cafe/restaurant. They used to come out of the forest on top of these two magnificent looking elephants and gently tie them to a wooden post by a loose knot. I watched this spectacle for a few days before I asked them why don’t the elephants just pull at the rope and escape.

The old man told me something that stuck in my mind ever since.

He told me that when the elephants were very young they would be tied up at night to a long stake that was firmly placed into the ground. Then tied very firmly with a knot that when pulled would only get tighter onto that stake.

No matter how hard the little baby elephant pulled he wouldn’t be able to get himself loose. And slowly over a few weeks the elephant would give up entirely. The little elephant realised it was no use pulling and excepted his new bondage. He wouldn’t bother to pull any more. And that’s how as adults they were confident that the elephants wouldn’t pull at their rope and never escape.

The elephant trainer a short moral story

I found this story to be very sad indeed. How could such a beautiful and powerful animal such as an elephant be so conditioned and so quickly.

Because of this experience I got an enlightenment moment that has never left me.

I realised that its not just the elephant or the house flea that have this problem. I realised instantly as humans we all do the same thing to ourselves and in many different disguises. As humans we all create our own glass ceilings or prisons we create in our own minds.

Maybe it’s playing the self pity game, oh way does this always happen to me. Maybe we try a few times at something then give up believing we can’t do it. Maybe we get hurt in relationship after relationship and decide that we don’t want to do that again. Whatever it is as humans we are all guilty of creating these glass ceilings around ourselves.

There is hope

Some of you reading this may of realised you are guilty of doing these things to yourself, and can easily see your own glass ceilings. Others may realise you also have created these glass ceilings but can’t actually see where they are in your life.

This is where I can come in and help. I am a certified NLP Practitioner, a 3 Principles Buddhist life coach and with a simple chat I can help you notice your glass ceilings. I have now helped many others remove their glass ceilings and create brand new horizons for themselves, I’ve been professional doing this for over 4 years and have helped many many others see for themselves just where there limiting beliefs may be.
