Watching the Trains of Thought

There’s a simple way to understand thought and sometimes it easier to illustrate using a metaphor.
Imagine you’re standing on a quiet train platform, just watching trains pass by.
Each carriage represents a thought.
Some are light and easy.
Others may feel heavy.
Some are interesting… and some pass by without you even noticing them at all.
All day long, these trains come and go.
They arrive.
Some pause.
They leave again.
And for the most part, we simply stand there and watch.
The Moment We Step On Board
Now here’s the interesting part.
We don’t get on every train.
In fact, if you really reflect on it, the vast majority of thoughts that pass through your mind are never followed. They appear briefly and disappear just as quickly, without effort, without resistance, and without any involvement from you.
But every now and then, a particular carriage catches your attention.
Something about it feels important…
or worrying…
or intriguing.
And without really realising it, you step on board.
You follow that train of thought.
One moment you’re standing peacefully on the platform… and the next, you’re somewhere else entirely, caught up in a story, a memory from the past, or a fear or possibility of the future.
What Buddhism Points To
In Buddhist understanding, this is often referred to as attachment.
Not in a complicated or philosophical sense, but in a very simple, human way. We attach ourselves to certain thoughts and then follow them to where they lead.
And when the thought we’ve stepped into is a negative one, it can begin to feel as though we’re stuck on that train, unable to get off.
It can feel real.
Sometimes it can feel consuming.
Or it can feel like there’s no choice but to stay on board.
A Gentle Realisation
But here’s something gentle, and quite profound, to notice.
“We are already very good at letting go of thoughts”
Thousands upon thousands of thoughts pass through our minds every single day, and we don’t attach to most of them.
They come…
and they go…
quietly and naturally.
No effort required.
No technique needed.
It’s only the thoughts that capture our attention that we tend to follow.
You’re Already Letting Go
And seeing this FACT as reality, can be quietly helpful.
Because it begins to shift something.
It shows us that letting go isn’t some special skill reserved for calm moments or years of practice.
It’s something we’re already doing, all the time.
Effortlessly.
Naturally.
Unconsciously.
Remaining on the Platform
And perhaps, with just a little awareness, that unconscious ability can become something we gently recognise.
Not to force ourselves to “let go” of difficult thoughts…
but simply to see that we don’t have to board every train that arrives.
That there is space.
That there is choice. Not in controlling our thoughts, but in whether we follow them.
Sometimes, all that’s needed is a small moment of noticing…
…and the next time a train arrives, we can simply choose to remain on the platform, watching as it passes by.
No struggle.
No resistance.
Just awareness.
Just something to reflect on as you move through your day today.
Kind and Warmest Regrads
Much of what we struggle with in life is not caused by circumstances themselves, but by how those circumstances are experienced through our thoughts. When understanding deepens, the mind naturally settles and clarity returns and often without effort.
This quiet shift in perspective sits at the heart of everything shared here. Not fixing what is broken, but rediscovering what has always been present beneath the noise.
*Dhamma Tāpasā is the spiritual name given to Andrew Hallas, a former Buddhist monk whose writing explores how peace of mind emerges when we stop mistaking thought for reality. His work shares a gentle, human understanding of mental well-being through lived experience, reflection, and insight.
