A Lost Stranger And A Village That Knew Something Others Didn’t
There was once a village where everyone lived in a state of perfect happiness. They were kind to one another, and no one ever had any problems. The village provided for all their needs and took care of them from birth to death.
The Village knew a secret not many others do!
One day, a lost stranger came to the village, and the inhabitants became quite perplexed. They were very curious about him, they didn’t know what he might do or what his intentions were. So they decided to ask him a question.
“What is your reason for coming here?” The villagers asked
The lost stranger answered “I am looking for myself.” replied the lost stranger “Because wherever I go, my thoughts come with me, telling me I should be different, better, further along than I am.”
This was a strange answer indeed. It suggested that there was someone who was not satisfied with their surroundings in this perfect village. Perhaps as an unsatisfied person, he may even be dangerous.
“Why are you looking for yourself?” they asked.
A Question That Wouldn’t Leave
“Because I am lost” said the stranger calmly. “Wherever I go, my thoughts come with me, telling me I should be different, better, further along than I am.”
At this, the villagers began to breathe more easily. They could easily help him find his way and soon he would leave.
After explaining where he was they thought the matter settled. Yet several weeks had passed and the lost stranger had not yet disappeared. In fact, he seemed to be planning on staying indefinitely!
The villagers were quite confused about this behavior: What could he be wanting?
So they went to him once more and asked gently,
“If the village provides everything you need, why do you still feel lost?”
The lost stranger smiled.
“Because wherever I go, my thoughts come with me.”
The villagers did not understand this at first. In their village, thoughts rose and fell like the weather. They noticed them, but they did not follow them. They had learned long ago that thoughts were not directions, only passing clouds.
So instead of giving the stranger advice, or telling him what to do, they invited him to simply sit with them.
Seeing What Had Always Been There
They showed him how life was always unfolding fresh, moment by moment.
How feelings were signals, not problems.
How the mind creates experience through thought, yet awareness remains untouched beneath it all.
Slowly, the stranger began to notice something for himself.
He saw that the one he had been searching for was never missing, only covered by stories he had mistaken for truth.
He realised that being “lost” was not a place, but a thought believed too deeply.
And in seeing this, the search quietly ended.
One morning, the villagers noticed something strange.
The lost stranger was no longer a stranger.
He laughed more easily. rested more deeply. and moved through the village just as they did, responding to life, rather than thinking his way through it.
Someone asked him,
“Have you found what you were looking for?”
He paused, then replied softly,
“No. I realised I was never lost.”
And with that, the village remained exactly as it had always been, a place of perfect happiness, now with one more villager who finally knew why.
Perhaps You’ve Felt Like This Too
Perhaps you’ve felt like that stranger. Searching for peace, clarity, or a sense of being ‘home’, only to discover one day that it had never left, it had just been obscured by the noise of thought.
Much of what we struggle with in life is not caused by circumstances themselves, but by how those circumstances are experienced through our thoughts. When understanding deepens, the mind naturally settles and clarity returns, often without effort.
This quiet shift in perspective sits at the heart of everything shared here. Not fixing what is broken, but rediscovering what has always been present beneath the noise.
I hope you can join me in discovering more.
