Living with Regret

What Regrets Do You Have?

Almost every single person I’ve ever helped during a life coaching session is living with regret.

So what’s it like living with regret? I myself have lived with regrets and I’m someone who has travelled extensively since the early 1990’s. Travelling to well over 50 countries around the world. As well as living and worked full time in countries like South Africa, Costa Rica, Australia, Thailand and Portugal. I’ve even met some of the most historical figures of our time. Nelson Mandela, Christian Barnard and Thich Nhat Hanh to name just a couple. Spending many years training as a Buddhist monk. And even spent time as a river guide and overland safari guide across Africa. Worked in a tropical Cloud Forest and learnt 3 languages.

And yet I still had regrets

Now some of you may read all of the above and think I’ve have had an amazing life. And believe me I know I have. I’ve seen opportunity and taken it, where others only see fear I see adventure. But everyone I’ve ever asked this question, is living with regret in some form or other. And there it’s always some similarities.

My regrets are simple and cause me no sleepless nights. I’ve lived a truly extra ordinary life, grabbing life by the horns so to speak. The regrets I have are NOT what I’ve done but always what I haven’t done. And this is an all too common issue.

We regret NOT doing something IN OUR LIFE!

I’ve regretted NOT asking that girl out, NOT spending more time surfing, or NOT visiting airs rock while in Australia. But that was then. Now as I trained as a Buddhist monk and then becoming an accredited NLP teacher I’ve now learnt the tricks needed to live without having Regrets.

So what do you regret in your life?

A GREAT little exercise that helps us stop living with regret. And most Life Coaches use with people who maybe unhappy about how their life turned out, ask this simple question.

Ask yourself this:

“Imagine you are on your deathbed and your looking back on your life. What has to happened in your life for you to truly feel like you’ve lived a fantastic and fulfilling existence?”

These are the 5 Most common answers to this question. Which one sounds like YOU?

I Wish I Had The Courage To Live A Life True To Myself, Not The Life Others Expected Of Me.

If Only I Hadn’t Worked So Hard.

I Should Of Have Had The Courage To Express My Feelings.

If Only I Had Stayed In Touch With My Friends.

I Wish I Had Let Myself Be Happier.

So what would it take for you to live a fulfilled and happier life? What would it be like learning to have the courage to face your fears head on. Learning NOT to have regrets or missing out on some great opportunities. Visualise what it would be like learning to let go and saying YES more often? How would it be to learn a new skill thar helps you into a more fulfilling career? Or perhaps too feel proud of yourself?

My own experience:

My own personal experience with death and these regrets came when I saw my auntie on her sickbed, when I was 12 years old. I don’t really remember the circumstances why my auntie was dying at home, I just have a very vivid and clear picture in my mind.

The image i have is that of sitting in my aunties bedroom as my mum visited. My mother was chatting while I just sat in a chair. I remember looking at all the tubes and machines see was linked up too and felt rather sad. She told my mum that before she died she just wanted to feel “the sand between her toes and to feel the grass under her feet just one last time”. And as a result this simple phrase has stick in my mind ever since and with an unshakable force.

Wow that hit me hard and I remember thinking that those were such simple joyful and completely free things to want. I honestly believe this is one of the most major reasons I’ve spent virtually my entire life travelling the entire world exploring these FREE and simple things.

The Prisons we create within our own Mind

Two Short Motivational Moral Stories

The Prisons of Our Minds

The prisons we create within our mind can have a devastating effect on our wellbeing. This story that follows is a scientific fact, and demonstrates beautifully how as humans we create prisons within our own mind. Usually these prisons keep us from achieving our greatest desires and a lot of the time we have no idea we’ve even created them.

These prisons we create in our own mind are also known as a glass ceiling. An invisible ceiling we believe we can’t move past. This glass ceiling feeling could be found in our relationships, our monetary income, business dealings or just about any aspects within our own lives.

The Common House Flea

The common house flea is one of the smallest animals on the earth. Not much bigger than a couple of millimetres. However this little creature has a remarkable ability. It has the power in those tiny back legs to propel itself to jump 200 times it’s own height. I’m relation to a cat that’s over 16 times higher.

Now if you capture a house flea and place a glass cup over them, something very interesting happens.

The prisons of our minds

When the flea jumps to try and escape he will keep hitting his little head on the bottom of the glass cup. After a few more attempts and with each jump ending in a headache, the flea realises what’s happening and will adjust his jumping height accordingly. The flea will now jump to just under this new glass roof or glass ceiling. After all why would you want to jump and keep smacking your head on the roof.

Now for the really interesting bit.

When you remove the glass our poor flea has now been conditioned into jumping at this new height. He has learnt from experience that if he jumps any higher it will smack its head on the glass ceiling.

This is the glass ceiling syndrome or the prisons we create in our own minds. Everyone of us as humans will create these so called glass ceilings within our minds. From telling yourself your not good enough, to feeling self pity over a lack of money. Everyone of us as humans has at least a few of these glass ceilings or prisons created.

Here’s Another example:

A fully grown elephant is one of the strongest and largest mammals to walk the earth and a far cry from the little house flea in the previous story. However the poor elephant will also develop its own glass ceiling.

The Elephant Trainer

The elephant shirt story on prisons we create within our minds

This is also a scientifically proven idea and the story was told to me by a Loas forest farmer who used elephants to do the work of a tractor.

When I was a Buddhist monk I used to watch every morning as an old man and his son walked from there house that over looked the Mekong river down to a small enclosed paddock to collect there two prized elephants. They would climb on top and go to work in the forest. Everyday at around lunch time they would come out of the forest and visit a local small cafe/restaurant. They used to come out of the forest on top of these two magnificent looking elephants and gently tie them to a wooden post by a loose knot. I watched this spectacle for a few days before I asked them why don’t the elephants just pull at the rope and escape.

The old man told me something that stuck in my mind ever since.

He told me that when the elephants were very young they would be tied up at night to a long stake that was firmly placed into the ground. Then tied very firmly with a knot that when pulled would only get tighter onto that stake.

No matter how hard the little baby elephant pulled he wouldn’t be able to get himself loose. And slowly over a few weeks the elephant would give up entirely. The little elephant realised it was no use pulling and excepted his new bondage. He wouldn’t bother to pull any more. And that’s how as adults they were confident that the elephants wouldn’t pull at their rope and never escape.

The elephant trainer a short moral story

I found this story to be very sad indeed. How could such a beautiful and powerful animal such as an elephant be so conditioned and so quickly.

Because of this experience I got an enlightenment moment that has never left me.

I realised that its not just the elephant or the house flea that have this problem. I realised instantly as humans we all do the same thing to ourselves and in many different disguises. As humans we all create our own glass ceilings or prisons we create in our own minds.

Maybe it’s playing the self pity game, oh way does this always happen to me. Maybe we try a few times at something then give up believing we can’t do it. Maybe we get hurt in relationship after relationship and decide that we don’t want to do that again. Whatever it is as humans we are all guilty of creating these glass ceilings around ourselves.

There is hope

Some of you reading this may of realised you are guilty of doing these things to yourself, and can easily see your own glass ceilings. Others may realise you also have created these glass ceilings but can’t actually see where they are in your life.

This is where I can come in and help. I am a certified NLP Practitioner, a 3 Principles Buddhist life coach and with a simple chat I can help you notice your glass ceilings. I have now helped many others remove their glass ceilings and create brand new horizons for themselves, I’ve been professional doing this for over 4 years and have helped many many others see for themselves just where there limiting beliefs may be.

Mountain of Enlightenment

Climbing the Mountain of Enlightenment an Inspirational and Motivational Short Moral Story

Climbing the mountain of enlightenment short original moral story

An old man begins a long and steady climb up to the top of a mountain. The path is rough as not many take the route he has chosen. It is muddy and in places slippery underfoot with many jagged rocks and thorny bushes he must negotiate along the way. It is raining heavily and the clouds have descended all around him making his journey seem even tougher. His thinking is fast and one of constant complaining, causing him much suffering as he goes.

As he slowly climbs he mutters under his breath with every step. His words are harsh and cruel to himself but he continues onwards. The rain doesn’t let up and the clouds seem even thicker as he keeps to the chosen path.

On more then one occasion his mind tells him to give up, on more than one occasion he feels it is hopeless and believes that the journey isn’t worth it. But he pushes on despite he constant complaining.

As he progresses his thoughts begin to slow and his harsh words to himself lessen. He begins to see the clouds all around him part ever so slightly. The rain is easing.

Finally he pushes through the clouds and is greeted with a glorious blue sky and the sun shines its beautiful warming rays upon him. A smile graces his face and his thinking mind has stopped. He can see the peak in the distance and the clouds far below.

His mind is still and as clear as the blue sky around him. He is filled with joy and peace and It’s just a few more steps to the top, just a few more steps to go.

Moral of the Story:

As humans it is the thoughts we have that play havoc in our lives. They can cause us stress and anxieties of pure suffering. To see these thoughts and our inner dialogue as no more than passing clouds in a weather system of our own making can help us let go and stop attaching importance to them.

Our feelings come from our thoughts and our behaviours are acting on those feelings. It is the thinking and inner dialogue that causes our feelings and are feelings dictate our behaviours. Thoughts come and thoughts go, just like clouds in the sky, neither attach or hold onto them and are behaviours are innately one of peace.

We can not control our thoughts, as humans we are like little thought factories producing one thought after another. It is always our attachment to these thoughts that make us suffer. Just allow the thought to pass, like the clouds in the sky, neither wanting to control or attach to them.

A Pig Called No-Squeal

Motivational Moral Story

A Pig Called No-Squeal

Once upon a time, there were two calves who were part of a country household. Their names were little Red and Big Red, At the same home there also lived a girl and a baby pig. Since the pig hardly ever made a sound, he was known as ‘No-squeal’.

The masters of the house treated No-squeal very very well. They fed him large amounts of the very best rice, and even rice porridge with rich brown sugar.

A pig called no squeal classic story

The two calves noticed this. They worked hard pulling plows in the fields and bullock carts on the roads. Little Red said to Big Red, “My big brother, in this household you and I do all the hard work. We bring prosperity to the family. But they feed us only grass and hay. The baby pig No- squeal does nothing to support the family. And yet they feed him the finest and fanciest of foods. Why should he get such special treatment?”

The wise elder brother said, “Oh young one, it is dangerous to envy anybody. Therefore, do not envy the baby pig for being fed such rich food. What he eats is really ‘the food of death”.

“There will soon be a marriage ceremony for the daughter of the house, and little No-squeal will be the wedding feast! That’s why he is being pampered and fed in such rich fashion.

“In a few days the guests will arrive. Then this piglet will be dragged away by the legs, killed, and made into curry for the feast.”

Sure enough, in a few days the wedding guests arrived. The baby pig No-squeal was dragged away and killed. And just as Big Red had said, he was cooked in various types of curries and devoured by the guests.
Then Big Red said, “My dear young brother, did you see what happened to baby No- squeal?”

“Yes brother,” replied Little Red, “now I understand.”

Big Red continued, “This is the result of being fed such rich food., Our poor grass and hay are a hundred times better than his rich porridge and sweet brown sugar. For our food brings no harm to us, but instead promises long life!”

Moral of the Story:

Don’t envy the well-off, until you know the price they pay.

The Zen Master and The Thief

A Motivational Spiritual Story

The Zen Master and the Thief

One evening, Zen master Shichiri Kojun was practicing Mesitation when a thief entered his house with a sharp sword, demanding “money or his life”

Without any fear, Shichiri said, “Don’t disturb me! Help yourself too the money, it’s in that drawer”. And he resumed his meditation.

The thief was startled by this unexpected reaction, but he proceeded with his business anyway. While he was helping himself with the money, the master stopped and called,

The zen master and the thief spiritual story

“Don’t take all of it. Leave some for me to pay my taxes tomorrow”.

The thief left some money behind and prepared to leave. Just before he left, the master suddenly shouted at him,

“You took my money and you didn’t even thank me?! That’s not polite!”.

This time, the thief was really shocked at such fearlessness. He thanked the master and ran away.

The thief later told his friends that he had never been so frightened in his life. A few days later, the thief was caught and confessed his thieft at Shichiri’s house, among many other crimes.

When the master was called as a witness, he said, “No, this man did not steal anything from me. I gave him the money. He even thanked me for it.”

The thief was so touched that he decided to repent. Upon his release from prison, he became a disciple of the master and many years later, he attained Enlightenment.
