What are Positive Distractions?

I’m not sure if positive distractions is the scientific term, however as a former Buddhist monk I’ve been using these for many years and they really do work.

A positive distraction is something we can use or do to change our mood from a negative, sluggish mood into a more positive and energised attitude. Your own personal mood boosters if you like.

There are a few simple tasks and exercises that we can do to collect together some of these personal mood boosters. These then become our tools to battle when any negativity or dwellings on the past that arises in our minds.

I’m going to share Two with You Today!

This first task is all about realising you have more good happening in your life than bad. Unfortunately sometimes as humans we have the tendency to focus to much on the one or two problems we have in our lives, becoming consumed by these thoughts. We forget to look at the bigger picture and neglect to notice all the good we already have in our lives.

Finding the 7 Wonders in Your Life

Finding the 7 Wonders of your life will start to shift your perspective from those negative thoughts to focusing more on the positive we already have in our lives. Once this little task is completed we have our very first little tool to combat negativity.

Now let’s create an army of these tools so negativity has no chance to linger longer than needed in our minds.

The second Positive Distraction

There is a scientific rule discovered by Abraham Hicks called the 17 second rule. This means that if we bombard the mind with 17 seconds worth of positivity it has the ability to gather it own momentum and produce further thoughts of the same.

The 20 Second Meditation is using this same scientific approach and turning it into a meditation. For 20 seconds we saying positive things towards ourselves out loud and with passion. Really mean what your saying even if it feels a little alien at first. This is for just 20 seconds so keep going and after a few more moments you start to feel the belief that was your saying to yourself is true. Keep it up for 20 seconds and the mind has shifted into a positive state. It will also have momentum and start to generate its own positivity.

A word of caution; even if your depressed this will change your mood, even if for a moment, the momentum will be there but it’s like pushing something heavy up a hill it will need a constant boost of energy now and again to get that momentum from stoping.

The 20 Second Meditation

I’ve got another little trick called the 20 Second meditation that I would like to share with you quickly today.

The reason why this is called The 20 Second Meditation is because a meditation is a one pointed concentration on something, generally we focus on our breath. The 20 Second Meditation however is a focus on positivity and similar to that of a mantra meditation.

There is no need to sit crossed legged on the floor, or with your eyes closed I do this walking in the countryside or taking a shower or simply wandering down the street.

Scientifically Based

When in negativity, science tells us that 17 seconds of continuous positivity changes our thought patterns and generates more positivity on its own.

How do I start

For the first time you do this 20 Second Meditation find somewhere quiet and private.

Now For 20 seconds I want you to tell yourself how amazing you are. And I want you to do this out loud, doing this exercise out loud works better than quietly in your mind. I want you to Just keep praising yourself, tell yourself how proud you are of yourself, how wonderful, how amazing, how great, and do it with passion.

Keep going for the full 20 seconds, and you will see the shift inside yourself. Keep going with praise of kindness and positivity for that full 20 Seconds.

Just 20 seconds

At first it feels a little hard and strange but keep going for just 20 seconds and you will feel the shift inside yourself

It’s a bit like pushing a car, the first bit requires effort to get the car rolling, but once moving it will keep rolling for a bit all on its own. Just like your mind, effort to start the shift keep the momentum up for 20 seconds and you can stop. Your mind will keep rolling for a bit with positivity. We have changed our negativity mindset into a positive in just 20 seconds.
